What a summer we’ve had so far! Not too hot, not too cold, not too rainy, not too dry, no smoke (*furiously knocking on wood*) – though perhaps July did whip by a little too quickly.

Before the COVID pandemic, our family had a penchant for leaving town as much as possible during the summer – road trips near and far every weekend. Summer 2020 & 2021 forced us to explore offerings closer to home; and if we’re looking for a silver lining to the last two years, this is definitely one of them. 

The long Alberta days and amazing weather coupled with Edmonton’s unbelievable river valley, parks, trail systems, restaurants, breweries, and ice creameries has been more than enough to keep us happy this summer!

Whether you’re grabbing coffees from Awn before hitting up our park, hopping on your bikes with ice cream in mind, or heading downtown for a ball game, Lansdowne is the perfect home base.

Lansdowne Rink Boards Facelift

You may have noticed the fresh coat of paint on the Lansdowne Rink boards that was recently completed mid-July. What an upgrade!

Park & Tennis Court Cleanup Update

Those who have used the park and tennis court facilities following our July 9th cleanup will have noticed the playground being in tip-top shape and much progress made towards cleaning up the tennis courts.

Thank you to all Lansdowne families who came out to help keep our facilities in excellent condition. Many hands made light work, and the event also turned into a great opportunity for everyone to socialize.

Due to time constraints, we were only able to remove the vegetation growth from the west tennis court but intend on hosting a repeat event in the future to tackle the east court and to again give the park some TLC after the high traffic it has seen this summer.

Learning More About the History of Lansdowne’s Logo

A Lansdowne resident since 1988, Mike Gruber volunteered with the Community League and also had a hand in the development of the original logo. He is trained as a graphic designer and helped create the logo by hand (literally cut and paste).

Isn’t it telling that both Margaret Lee and Mike Gruber still live in our beautiful neighbourhood? And their grandchildren were even in the same class in Lansdowne School! In a class taught by another Lansdowne resident, Marie Weir!

Honouring the history of our neighbourhood by bringing this logo back to life is so lovely. And how wonderful that the logo still depicts the trees of Whitemud ravine, the University farm fields, and the houses of Lansdowne.

Meet the LCL Board Members.

Last May, my wife and I travelled to Edmonton to find a new home as we were relocating from Vernon, BC. Upon exploring Lansdowne, we immediately put an offer in for our new home - known among the neighbourhood as the Darth Vader house. Tanya and I (along with our dog Sam) relocated in July 2021.

Shortly after we moved in, I signed up to be on the Board as the Facilities Manager for the community. What better way to get to know neighbours than to go all in by volunteering. I have a long history of community volunteerism primarily around sporting activities such as rugby and mountain biking. No matter where we found ourselves, you will find me volunteering. Maybe that is just the Saskatchewan farm kid way of living (and Yes, Go Riders!).

Being recently retired and a fitness enthusiast, I expanded my hobby and became a certified Strength and Conditioning Coach at Regnant Strength and Performance. We look forward to meeting more members of our community this summer and on the skating rink this winter.
